~ The final "Stirring the Pot" picnic is this evening. It looks like the rain will force us indoors tonight, but a rain location has already been planned inside the MAC. Come, enjoy good food and good company. The chef demonstrations begin at 5:30 pm.

~ Come to Downtown Monroe for another Concert on the Square on Thursday evening starting at 6:30. If you haven't seen the newly opened northeast corner of the Square, this is perfect time to check it out. The band this week is Jefferson County Bluegrass.

~ Visit Paoli on Saturday for the 3rd Annual 3rd Annual Paddle & Pig-Out benefiting the Upper Sugar River Watershed Association! USRWA members receive a free lunch (the lunch is also available to purchase for everyone else). The activities, which are open to the public, include canoe excursions at 10am - Noon - 2pm (first come, first served basis), casting demonstrations, a kayak and rain garden raffle and more.

~ Wolf Hollow Golf Course in Lena has a Capital Improvements Scramble fundraiser on Sunday at 9 am. $75 for the round of golf, cart, breakfast, lunch and prizes. Call the course at 815-369-5513 for more information.

~ Feel like a movie? Come down to Sky Vu Drive In to see a double feature of GI Joe and Public Enemies, starting on Friday. Goetz Theater in Monroe is showing Shorts, The Time Traveler's Wife, and District 9 this weekend. In Freeport, Lindo Theater is showing Aliens in the Attic, Bandslam , District 9, Funny People, G.I. Joe, G-Force, and The Ugly Truth.

Things to Do Around Monroe

Here's looking ahead to what is going on in the area this weekend:

~ Blackhawk Technical College hosts an Educational Open House on Thursday from 4 until 6:30 pm. Tour the campus, sign up for classes, take a free mini-course, register for door prizes and enjoy the refreshments.

~ Go Big Red! UW Alumni, come out to Toffler's in New Glarus on Thursday for UW Alumni Happy Hour from 6 until 8 pm.

~ Bargain hunters, come over to Monroe this Saturday for Citywide Garage Sale Day.

~ Winslow has their annual River Days community celebration this weekend. There will be community food and beer tents, music, inner tube races, tug of war, pony rides, a petting zoo and more.

~ Enjoy live music this weekend. Baumgartner's hosts Richard Wiegel on string guitar on Saturday evening. Toffler's hosts The Rowdy Prairie Dogs also on Saturday. The Greg Anderson Band plays at the New Glarus Hotel on both Friday and Saturday.

~ If you prefer to participate in the music making, Gap Church by Albany is having an Old Fashioned Hymn Sing on Sunday.

~ This Saturday is the Freeport Fusion Festival in Freeport at the Skate Park. From noon until 6, enjoy the skateboard competition, music and more.

~ Plan ahead for next week's concert on the Square in Monroe. Jefferson County Bluegrass plays on the stage on the south side of the Square starting at 6:30 pm. Bring a dinner or pick up a boxed supper, and don't forget to support the Humane Society Beer Tent.

A fun summer family event is back! The Summer Fair on the Square is this Saturday, August 8. The all day event will feature activities for all ages, and it will benefit local charitable and non-profit groups.

Sign up now for Cooking Classes at Kookaburra's

Kookaburra's in Monroe has been expanding ever since it opened last fall. Laura has talked about offering cooking classes since she first opened the store, and this month she begins her class offerings.

The first class is Quick, Easy, Flavorful. This class will focus on easily prepared meals using readily available spices, seasonal foods, and local meats. This class takes place on Tuesday, August 11 from 5:30 until 7 pm.

Spaetzle Night is the second class, taking place on Tuesday, August 18 at the same time. Learn how to make this German side dish in regular and gluten free varieties, and learn how to dress it up in different ways.

Each class is $15 per person, and reservations are required. Stef Culbertson from Goose Chaser Farm will be teaching the classes, and she is a joy to talk cooking with. You'll watch a demonstration, sample the foods, and receive the recipes. Contact Laura at 608.325.3955 or via email to register.
