Last chance for Open Enrollment

In Wisconsin, there are certain inflexible rules that apply to where public school students may attend school. School districts are geographically drawn, and students attend the district within whose boundaries they live.

Once a year, for three weeks in February, parents may apply for their children to attend school for free in a different public school district. This practice, Open Enrollment, is the only chance for a year to change school districts without physically moving.

Parents may apply for admission to up to three school districts for their children. These applications are not guaranteed to be approved. If the application is approved, the parents are not required to enroll their children in that school district.

If you are planning a move, that would put you geographically in a new school district, but you want your children to stay in the school district in which you currently reside, you can apply for open enrollment now as if you had already moved. If you are unsure of where you will be moving to, you can apply in the fall for a tution fee waiver. A tuition fee waiver is temporary, and you must then apply for open enrollment as soon as possible afterward (February of 2011 will be the next chance).

Virtual schools operated by public school systems (like the virtual middle school and virtual high school here in Monroe) also must follow open enrollment rules. If you wish for your child to attend a public virutal school, you must get your open enrollment application in right away.

The deadline for open enrollment applications to be received is 4 pm on February 19, this week Friday. You can download an application from the DPI website. There are also links to to answer questions you may have about open enrollment and a telephone number you can call with questions.

Argyle Integrated Environmental Studies Plant Sale

Argyle has a cutting edge program in their schools nowadays, the Argyle Integrated Environmental Studies program. As a fundraiser, the students are currently doing their annual Native Plant Sale.

The students have harvested over fifty varieties of native seeds this fall during their fieldwork. They will be planting these seeds and raising the seedlings in their greenhouse over winter. You can purchase single species trays, custom trays and collection trays. Each tray has 32 healthy plants in 2 inch pots and will cover 50 to 100 square feet of garden space.

See Species Available

There is an order form link from the species page or contact Les Bieneman to order. Ready-made collections will cover many options: Tall Grass Prairie, Woodland Edge, Rain Garden, Butterfly Garden, and Rock Garden.

Native plants require significantly less care than non-native species, and they attractive native species of birds, butterflies and animals.

The Annual ALEA Native Plant Sale provides funds to support Integrated Environmental Studies throughout Argyle School (4K-12th grade) with field trips, new scientific equipment, supplies for the greenhouse and educational curriculum.

Renaissance Faire sponsored by Shakespeare on the Edge

Hear ye, hear ye!

Let it be known throughout the land that all goode people from the Monroevian realm to the far reaches of the kingdom are invited to the Second Annual Gathering of Rogues and Ruffians Renaissance Faire from noon until 10 p.m. on September 19 at The Piazza.

The Renaissance Faire, sponsored by the nonprofit group Shakespeare on the Edge, offers an afternoon of food, fun and revelry for the whole family, followed by a candlelit performance of William Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest, by the Eclectic Rogues youth acting troupe beneath the stars on the Piazza’s enchanting outdoor stage. Showtime begins at 7:00 p.m.

Roaming the Faire grounds throughout the day will be more than 50 entertainers, pirates, insulters, fairies, jugglers, musicians, minstrels and storytellers, and a host of artisans and vendors will display their wares. Food will also be available, and the Faire will be held rain or shine.

Family friendly entertainment includes:

* Midwest Knife and Axe Throwers (teaching even the youngest lads and lasses to throw knives and axes at targets)
* UW-Madison Belly Dancers (performances, as well as classes for children)
* Chicago’s The Suitcase Shakespeare Company (performing Much Ado About Nothing in under an hour)
* The Guild of St. Michael Military (A Bristol group that spends their summers as Bristol Renaissance Military)
* Archery lessons for all ages
* The Complete Fool Juggler and Supplies

A silent auction of items donated by area businesses will be held from noon until 5:30 p.m. The auction is the primary fundraiser for Shakespeare on the Edge, which is also funded by grants from the Wisconsin Arts Board and United Way of Green County. With the dual focus of building self-empowerment and communication skills through acting, Shakespeare on the Edge sponsors the Eclectic Rogues Core Company, the Shakespeare Project for kids ages 8-18 and, beginning this fall, the Adult Shakespeare Project.

Admission to the Renaissance Faire is $1, with a $5 maximum per family. The Piazza is located at W5549 Center Road, 3.6 miles north of Monroe on Highway 69. For more information contact 608-325-5268 or search Shakespeare on the Edge at GreenCountySpotlight.com
